Trolleys
Propane hybrid electric trolleys provide an environmentally friendly
public transportation alternative. Their certification by the California
Air Resources Board and compliance with the American Disabilities Act
make them ideal for use as circulators, campus vehicles, shuttles, and
neighborhood service vehicles.

Hybrid trolleys, like the ones manufactured by Ebus Inc., operate using an alternating current, air-cooled electric motor powered by a battery pack. This battery pack is recharged using a low-emission propane-fueled microturbine unit to extend trolley range and runtime. Regenerative braking adds additional power to the battery by using the electric motors as generators during deceleration.
Propane-fueled trolleys offer the following benefits: • Transport 22 seated passengers and additional standing passengers. • Reach speeds of 40 miles per hour to quickly transport passengers to their destinations. • Offer an extended driving range compared to solely electric or fuel-operated units. • Emit lower amounts of four criteria air pollutants – hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter – in comparison to emissions from conventional diesel-fueled internal combustion engines • Reduce traffic congestion.
